Some of you may remember the students closing the gate to the campus and blocking the entrance way with buses? To commemorate this event that took placing 10 years ago, there was a re-enactment of this.
A chain-linked fence was rented for this event in which Greg Hlibok padlocked the gate. Along with the fence, two buses were parked near the gate to help add the effect of the actual event 10 years ago. I. King Jordon gave a short speech as well as Greg the student body President 10 years ago.
On March 11th students, faculty, staff and vistors marched to Capitol Hill; the same march that students participated in during the actual DPN. More than 2,000 people participated in this re-enactment., I myself was amazed at how many people particpated. I remember walking up to the top of the capitol steps and looking down over the crowd. People waving their hands, and screaming Deaf President Now and Deaf People/Power Now. I had never seen anything like this in my life, it was amazing to see so many people come together to support their credence.
Senators, past DPN leaders, and I King Jordon gave a speeches about the successes of the deaf community and what the future holds, with a concentration on residential schools. It was a great experience to be involved in the DPN10 anniversary and I look forward to many more visits.
We would like to thank Gallaudet University for their hospitality. We also thank the students in Clerc and Peet Hall for putting up with us and for giving us an experience of a life-time.
